Back to Basics

September’s been a busy month, and a great time to get back to basics. This month, as part of the Cal Exotics Sexpert program, I was able to do just that, with the Basic Essentials Nubby Softee.

The Nubby comes in an easy to open clear clamshell case. It’s visible through the front, and the back of the packaging has a picture of the product and some basic information about the toy.

This vibrator is 6 1/2″ long, and about 5” insertable. It’s made of translucent bubblegum pink TPE, which is pretty cool – you can see the internal parts. At the tip is located a silver bullet, and down below you can see the springs and batteries as well.  The toy has no smell at all when removed from the package.  The surface is a bit squishy, but not tacky, and the Nubby is flexible below the bullet. A small seam is noticeable up one side and down the other, but it’s flush with the surface and not noticeable during use.

The Nubby is divided into 3 sections: the tip, short neck, and body. The tip of the nubby is the narrowest part of this vibrator. It’s about 1 1/8” wide and 2 1/4″ long.  The very tip is smooth, and 6 columns of 3 nubs run down from the tip for stimulation. Towards the bottom, are 6 oval shaped nubs as well.  The short neck is surrounded by 2 raised rings, and the neck widens out the toy for the body.  The body of the Nubby is about 2” long, and is 1 3/4″ at its widest. It has a ring at the bottom as well.

The base of the Nubby is made of translucent ABS plastic in the same shade as the TPE. It unscrews right below the bottom ring on the vibrator’s body to reveal the battery compartment. Two AA batteries power the Nubby, and two small diagrams (on white) are inside where each battery goes to indicate the battery orientation.  An O-ring sits below the threads to make the Nubby waterproof and safe to use in the shower or bath. It makes it easy to clean before and after use as well – run it under warm water and use antibacterial soap.  Pat it dry, and store the Nubby in a toy bag or drawer.

The Nubby is controlled by a dial wheel at the base of the toy. Simply twist it to dial the vibrations from low to high. The vibrations are buzzy and felt best in the tip, as the TPE is not overly thick. They can also be felt well through the body of the toy.   The Nubby is pretty quiet – outside the body it’s quieter than a vibrating cell phone, and inside you’ll likely not hear it from a few feet away.

You’ll want to use a waterbased lube for easier insertion of the Nubby.  While the body does have a ring at the bottom, it’s not wide enough to function as a proper flared base. The Nubby can be used  safely anally, however, if you only insert the head and neck.

So, Does It Work? While I prefer G-spot vibrators, the Nubby does a good job of internal stimulation. The vibrations are reasonably strong and concentrated at the tip, which I enjoy. With the vibration location, the Nubby also works pretty well as a clitoral stimulator, and the nubs give it some extra texture. I would have liked a pattern or two for internal use, though.

I didn’t think the nubs or texturing on the head did anything internally, as it usually takes a lot more texture for me. I did like how this got wider at the bottom to give me a more filled feeling, however.

Thank you to Cal Exotics for sending this to me to review as part of their Sexpert program!
